What if your social media data actually belonged to you?

AT Protocol is one of the most interesting ideas in social media right now.

Why? Because it tries to fix the biggest problem with today’s platforms: lock-in. Built out of Bluesky’s work, it separates identity, data, and apps so people can move across services without starting from zero every time. The AT Protocol ("atproto") is the open protocol for building decentralised social web apps

That matters.

It means a more open social web, where developers can build new clients, feeds, moderation tools, and publishing layers on the same foundation. Bluesky is the best-known example, but the bigger story is the protocol itself — and the shift it represents.

The new European social media platform, W Social, also runs on this protocol. Their goal: "We believe in the need for a global, trusted social media platform owned, run, and hosted in Europe. W is built on verified human users, transparency, privacy, and free speech."

They are rolling out Beta access gradually. Join their waitlist to secure your preferred username!

For anyone in media, tech, or digital strategy, AT Protocol is worth watching closely. It’s not just another social platform. It’s infrastructure.

How it works

  • Accounts use decentralised identifiers (DIDs) plus human-readable handles.

  • User content lives in signed data repositories that can be synced between servers.

  • The network includes Personal Data Servers (PDS), relays, and app views.

  • App-specific behaviour is defined with schemas called Lexicons, which helps different apps interoperate.
